Used Oil in the Pacific

Used oil includes, but is not limited to, engine oils, transmission fluids, refrigeration oils, compressor oils, metalworking fluids, electrical insulating oils, and hydraulic fluids.

Environmental contamination occurs when used oil is dumped into drains, onto the ground, or into aquatic environments. Used oil often contains compounds that are harmful to both human health and the environment.

How SWAP2 is Responding

The SWAP2 project aims to support beneficiary countries at every stage of used oil management — from collection and storage to final disposal.

Several activities will be implemented, including pilot projects on small-scale infrastructure, training for all stakeholders involved in used oil management, the development of used oil waste management plans, and the design of sustainable financing mechanisms.
